Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
Come in … for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist. Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by kspmomto3 from Still a Crowd PleaserI loved Shel Silverstein books when I was a child, especially this one. I was happy to add it to my eldest daughter's library- it's fun to read a poem or two at a time. I also teach fifth grade and the poems from this books are the favorites of 10 and 11 year olds, year after year. They love to memorize them and read them to each other. Where the Sidewalk Ends is timeless!

Rated 5 out of 5 by syreeta from Poetry 101 for kidsAs a poet, I have loved reading these poems to my daughter. She certainly doesn't understand all of the language, but the sounds are so fun and the stories so silly (but full of meaning!). I think it's a great way to get little ones used to reading poetry in a way that is not academic or boring, which they will hopefully retain later in life. Much better than any of the "Poetry for Children" compilations, which my daughter closes on my hands before I can even get a whole poem out. I remember being so tickled by it was I was little and I love hearing my little one giggle over the silliness. The best things is how he doesn't talk down to kids--he gives them the whole messy truth, which feels like sharing a secret with your child.

He makes reading and writing poetry fun and attainable to children, encouraging wild, childlike thoughts and dreams. Where the Sidewalk Ends is an absolute classic and wonderful to read aloud. It's a special snuggletime book at our home.
